What is Isotropic, Quasi-Isotropic, and Anisotropic?

What is Isotropic, Quasi-Isotropic, and Anisotropic?

The carbon fiber composite drone frame structure is distorted due to the wrong layup design.

Due to the importance of isotropy and the neglect of the actual stress distribution, the concrete bridge cracks.

At this point, we should know that materials’ anisotropy, isotropy, and quasi-isotropy play a crucial role in many industries.

This guide will help you choose the right material for your solutions from its definition, performance comparison, how to make carbon fiber composite panels with three different properties, and their industry applications.

What is Isotropic, Quasi-Isotropic, and Anisotropic-2

1. Definition

Isotropic: means that the materials’ mechanical properties show consistency in all directions.

This means that it has the same mechanical properties regardless of the direction in which it is measured. Materials such as amorphous glass and metal alloys exhibit the same mechanical and thermal properties in all directions.

Quasi-isotropic: means that the strength and elasticity properties of a material in all directions in a plane are highly similar and tend to be isotropic. Simply put, materials and components exhibit the same mechanical properties in all directions in the plane. However, in the direction perpendicular to the material, they’re different.

Anisotropic: means that the material behaves differently in all directions. For example, because of its special molecular structure, carbon fiber materials, its strength, stiffness, thermal & electrical conductivity, and other properties are different in the horizontal and vertical.

2. Dimensions Comparison

Contrast Dimension Isotropic Quasi-Isotropic Anisotropic
Mechanical properties Well-distributed Approximate uniformity significant difference(Fiber direction and longitudinal of carbon materials)
CTE(Coefficient of Thermal Expansion) Same in all directions It’s roughly the same on a flat surface  There are significant differences in all directions(Interlayer of carbon composites)
Design freedom Low(No need to consider the directions) Medium (need laminated design optimization)  High (need the directional reinforcement)
Processing complexity Low Medium High
Typical materials Metals, ceramics, amorphous polymers Multidirectional laminated composites Wood, carbon fiber materials, unidirectional composite materials

3. How to Use Isotropic, Quasi-isotropic, And Anisotropic to Manufacture CFRP Plates?

No matter what kind of application you need carbon fiber composite materials, you need to consider the carbon fiber arrangement. It determines the mechanical and thermal properties of the composites in different directions.

What is Isotropic, Quasi-Isotropic, and Anisotropic-3

  • For example, a single layer of carbon fiber is anisotropic. CFRP laminates in the manufacturing process if arranged in one direction – all are 0°, ±45°, or 90°, laminates will also show anisotropy.
  • But if you want the performance of the laminate to be consistent in all directions– the laminate is isotropic or quasi-isotropic. The arrangement of the fibers needs to be redesigned during the lamination process.

For example, the fiber layers are arranged at 0º, 90º, and ±45°. This will balance the layering direction of the fibers. The mechanical properties of manufactured CFRP laminates remain unchanged no matter in which direction they are subjected to external forces.

These cross-arranged fiber layers provide the same properties in all directions, and fiber layers with different layering directions also provide specific mechanical properties.

  • 0º layer: In the fiber direction, it provides strength and stiffness to resist axial load-bearing loads, such as beams and columns.
  • +/ -45 º layer: provides shear, torsional strength, and stiffness to resist torsional and shear forces (e.g. I-beam web).
  • 90º layer: provides strength and stiffness in the direction of vertical fibers, with lateral impact and toughness.

Note: In addition to the orientation of the fiber, in the manufacture of isotropic, quasi-isotropic composite fiberboard, you need to lay more than 4 layers, each layer of fiber layer needs to have the same thickness and characteristics

4. Industry Applications of Isotropic, Quasi-isotropic, and Anisotropic For Carbon Fiber Composites

The orientation and arrangement of fibers in carbon fiber composites play a key role in their strength and rigidity properties. Its orientation and arrangement determine that the composite material has anisotropy, isotropy, and quasi-isotropy. Follow me to learn the application of these three different properties of composite carbon fiber materials.

  • Aerospace: The wings of drones and aircraft take advantage of the anisotropy of composite materials, which can provide high strength in the direction of fibers.

For example, the T1100 high-strength composite’s anisotropy provides more than 5,000 Mpa of strength in the axial direction. While reducing weight, fatigue strength is increased by 50%. It can reduce fuel efficiency and increase service life.

What is Isotropic, Quasi-Isotropic, and Anisotropic-4

  • Automotive manufacturing: The automobile’s chassis and battery housing take advantage of the quasi-anisotropy of composite materials to provide stable mechanical properties in different directions.

The CFRP composite honeycomb panel is used in the body, the bending stiffness will be improved. It can provide multi-sided upward impact resistance and increases the ability to absorb collision energy by +40%.

  • Outdoor sports equipment: The composites fishing rods, and golf clubs utilize anisotropic. Their axial strength and elasticity can increase by 35%, enabling them to deliver precisely the target and improve your customer satisfaction.

With quasi-anisotropy, the bicycle frame and the paddle’s torsional stiffness are greatly improved, and the force in the multi-direction is also stable.

  • Medical field: With isotropic, composite artificial joints can provide uniform wear resistance in all directions, extending the service life to 20+ years.
